How to Excel in a Job Interview

Some of us are getting to the point in our college careers where we will start to have job interviews. So, here are a few tips on how to excel in your future job interviews!

Know the Company

Find out as much information as you can through the company’s website. This includes the mission statement, values and goals, when the company started, and what the business prides itself in. A little obvious, but also know the position you applied for and tailor yourself to what the company is looking for.

Put on Your Favorite Business Wear

If your outfit is uncomfortable and does not express who you are then it’s time to head back into the closet. Ill fitting clothes are noticeable, so make sure if you buy new pieces that you test run them. Looking great will make you feel confident and that will show through.

Be the Most Vibrant You

Take a moment to think of the most positive, happy, optimistic person you know. The thought of them probably gives you good feelings and a warm heart. Do your best to create that same sensation for the interviewer to make a lasting impression. Smile and be passionate of your work, but stay true to you. Nothing is worse than coming off as fake.

Have Everything on Hand

Pull out a nice pad-folio and put your cover letter, resume, references, writing samples, and business cards in there. Even if the interviewer doesn’t ask to see any of the materials, it shows that you are prepared and organized. Which they will be appreciated.

Show Your Work

Do not just talk about your skill set. Prove your skills by displaying past work. This builds credibility and can impress the employer. Also, make sure the timing is right when you bring out your samples and that they are relevant to the topic at hand.

Let the Company Know You Want a Future with Them

People are not hired for the short term. When someone is hired, it’s because the employer can see them grow and contribute to the company for many years to come. Let the interviewer know what you see yourself doing for the business years down the road. This way they will not have to guess if you are a long term employee or not.

Write a Thank You Card

Once the interview is done, go home and write a thank you card to the interviewer! It’s not only appreciated, but shows you care.
